About Us

The BBA Energy Finance Group (EFG) is dedicated to connecting McCombs
undergraduate students to the exciting world of energy finance. Founded in October
2006, the EFG’s mission is to inform, empower, and advance students in their
understanding of the field and in their pursuit employment in the field upon graduation.

Why Energy?

Oil and gas has been king in Texas for years, and its utilities operate in some of the least
regulated electric markets on the North American continent. As a result, McCombs
graduates have a wealth of opportunities right on their own doorstep. The commercial
side of the industry has a fast paced and volatile market more intense than almost any
other on the planet. Other sides of industry are more project oriented. The industry is
also on the forefront of technological change and environmental policy. Energy finance
has something to offer for everyone.

What makes the EFG unique?

The EFG differs from many other professional organizations at the McCombs School of
Business in the fact that we exist first and foremost to give our members exposure to the
day to day environment they face in the field of energy finance. We strive to bring in
executives (including CFO’s) who can speak articulately about their firms’ strategies to
maximize profits. From hedging risk when buying natural gas liquids over a time horizon
for which no liquid market exists to determining the whether to drill in oil sands using
risky new drilling techniques to dealing with geopolitical strife, the EFG seeks to
familiarize its members with the key operational issues that they gain little exposure to in
the classroom.
